Season 6 Contest Overview

I would like to extend a hearty welcome to all of our new YOBI contestants and a hearty welcome back to all of our previous YOBI contestants. This season is going to be our best one yet!

Here’s an overview as to how our YOBI.tv talent contests work.

Preliminary Rounds:

Each contest consists of a number of preliminary weekly rounds. This season we’ve started off with 40 — but that number could (and probably will) change, usually as a result of our production schedule.

Voting:

Voting in each preliminary round is open from Noon Eastern time on Monday to Noon Eastern time on the following Monday. After voting closes, we tally the votes and advance the 2 contestants who have the highest number of votes into the Finals. We then clear the vote totals for all of the other contestants, and reopen voting in the next preliminary round. We repeat that process until all of the preliminary rounds have been completed.

Finals:

The contest finals begin immediately after the preliminary rounds finish. They consist of a number of weekly elimination rounds. We will post the knockout schemes when the finals begin, and the finalists who receive the lowest number of votes in each round will be eliminated according to those schemes until we have our Season 6 contest winners.

A couple of important things to note:

  1. Votes are set back to zero at the beginning of each preliminary round. This means that your chances of advancing to the contest finals are the same each week, regardless of when you discovered and entered the contest. A contestant who enters a YOBI contest in round 32 has the same chance to advance to the finals as a contestant who entered the contest in round 2.
  2. All of the voting in all of the rounds of all of the YOBI contests is done by members of the YOBI community. We here at YOBI are not allowed to vote, and we have no part in choosing who advances to the finals or who wins. Members of the YOBI community — in other words, YOU — are in complete control.
  3. If you advance to the finals during the early preliminary rounds, congratulations! You won’t have to worry about recruiting votes again until the finals, true — but don’t lose touch with the YOBI community, and definitely don’t change your email address without telling us. Every season a handful of really talented artists are eliminated from the finals for legal reasons because they miss our emails.

Best wishes and good luck to all of our Season 6 contestants!

How the YOBI.tv Contests Work

Our YOBI.tv talent contests generally have two parts: preliminary or qualifying Rounds, and the Finals.

Each preliminary Round lasts for one week. At the start of the round, the vote counts on all contest entries are set to zero. This vote reset gives contestants who discover a contest late in the game the same chance to advance to the Finals as a contestant who has been in the contest since its beginning.

Voting is open to members of the YOBI community all week. Note that our contests have no external or outside judges: all of our contest Finalists and Winners are decided by our YOBI members. Each YOBI member can cast one vote per entry per day…and yes, you can and you should vote for your own contest entries every day!

At the end of the Round, votes are tallied and the two contestants who have received the highest number of votes become Finalists and are advanced into the Finals. The vote counts on all entries are then reset to zero, and another preliminary Round begins.

The Finals begin after all of the preliminary Rounds have been complete. They proceed in the same way as the preliminary Rounds, but with two main differences.

The first difference is that only the Finalists can be voted on during the Finals. Voting for contest entries of all non-Finalists is suspended until the beginning of the next contest season.

The second difference between the preliminary Rounds and the Finals is that the Finalists who receive the fewest number of votes during each week are eliminated from the contest. The elimination scheme for each of our talent contests could be different, so make sure you are familiar with the scheme for the particular contest that interests you.

Once the eliminations for the first week of the Finals are completed, the vote counts on all remaining Finalist entries are set to zero and the next week begins. This process is continued until the ultimate Winners of the contests are determined.

Best Wishes and Good Luck to all!

What is YOBI.tv?

Even though we are nearing the end of our fifth contest season, we still get this question pretty regularly. Here’s the scoop…

YOBI.tv is a network of talent contest websites. We currently have five talent contests in our lineup:

  • YOBISing – which features original songs (i.e. no covers allowed) by singers and other musical artists
  • YOBIAct – where aspiring actors and on-screen performers can upload shorts and sketches that show their performances
  • YOBIFilm – which features trailers and short films that highlight a filmmaker’s technical and artistic skills
  • YOBILaugh – where comedians and other funny folks can upload their sketch comedy or stand-up routines *
  • YOBIPics – where photographers and others with an artistic sense can upload their best photographs

In our first two contest seasons, we put together cash and travel prize packages for our winners. These prize packages were fun for our winners, of course, but they didn’t provide the sort of career-changing opportunities that we ultimately wanted YOBI.tv to provide to aspiring artists.

Beginning in our third season, we began to offer precisely this sort of career-changing opportunity to our winners by placing them in the cast and crew of our original webseries. This placement gives our winners specific, career-related experiences that could prove invaluable to their career development.

All of our talent contest winners from Season 3 were placed in our first two webseries — Dream Maker, starring Audrina Patridge of MTV’s The Hills, and New Stage, starring Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino of MTV’s Jersey Shore.

Our YOBISing winners from Season 4 were placed in the Take The Stage webseries, where they were mentored by music industry superstars Johnny Wright and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and are now competing for the grand prize: to be signed to a music management contract with Johnny Wright’s Wright Entertainment Group and YOBI.tv. Episodes of Take The Stage are now airing concurrently on YOBI.tv and the MySpace Take The Stage page, and voting is open. (There is no Simon Cowell on Take The Stage. Our viewers’ votes will determine who wins the grand prize.)

Our YOBIAct, YOBIFilm, YOBILaugh, and YOBIPics winners from Season 4 were placed in our Aspire webseries, which is still in the works but tentatively scheduled to go into production in the Fall of 2012.

We will be using this same model in Season 5, with our YOBISing winners moving on to compete in the second season of Take The Stage and the winners of our other contests being placed in the cast or crew of our next original webseries.

Our Season 5 talent contests are currently in their preliminary rounds, which means that there are still chances to advance to the finals in all of the contests. If you or someone you know might be a good fit for our talent contests, we encourage you all to upload a contest entry or two. There is no YOBI.tv membership fee, no contest entry fee, and no voting fee. Aspiring artists really have nothing to lose and everything to gain by becoming a part of the YOBI.tv talent network.

Best wishes and good luck to all!

* In Season 6, comedy sketches will move into YOBIAct, and YOBILaugh will be for stand-up performances only.
